politics @lemmy.world•Gov. Newsom expanded free preschool. Now private daycares say they can’t afford to stay open
7·3 days agoYeah, expanding social services for child care is almost always the right move, especially if you want people to even consider having kids. No program is perfect, and putting daycares out of business is unfortunate, but you can solve each problem as it comes up. The frustrating thing is that political opponents will just shit all over something like this and argue that it should be cancelled entirely.

politics @lemmy.world•Gov. Newsom expanded free preschool. Now private daycares say they can’t afford to stay open
19·3 days agoThe real issue is that kids have to be at least four years old for the pre-K program, so kids younger than that have limited options if the local daycare closes. Babies and kids who aren’t potty-trained are more expensive to care for than older kids, so those parents may not be able to afford care now.
I still think the expanded pre-K is a good idea, but it would be nice if the state offered daycare subsidies or something to support the younger kids who still need daycare.

politics @lemmy.world•Mark Zuckerberg will testify today in California in an unprecedented social media trial that questions whether Meta’s platforms deliberately addict and harm children
3·3 days agoSpoiler alert: Zuck is given a stern talking-to and told to make his platform less addicting. He does nothing, is not punished in any meaningful way, and we grudgingly accept the new reality.

Technology@lemmy.world•In a blind test, audiophiles couldn't tell the difference between audio signals sent through copper wire, a banana, or wet mudEnglish
1·7 days agoFun fact: this is where the “banana connector” came from. Before copper was discovered, early humans used bananas for all their audio connections. The name stuck, even though wires are made of metal today.

It’s hard to hear what Microsoft is saying over the sound of my 15 year-old printers running on CUPS.
