Hygiene literally means practices that maintain health. Saying “we are healthy by maintaining better hygiene” literally means “We maintained our health by engaging in practices that maintained our health.”

Technology@lemmy.world•Group Pushing Age Verification Requirements for AI Turns Out to Be Sneakily Backed by OpenAIEnglish
111·3 days agoI’m pretty sure the vast majority of the people who are anonymous are robots and stealth marketers. Normal people aren’t usually willing to put in the effort to maintain their privacy. They use their “anonymous” social media and AI accounts on devices tied to their verified credentials (Google, Amazon, Walmart, Microsoft, etc.)
My theory is that these companies want identity verification to prevent swarms of bot farms from clogging up their servers. Up until this point, the drawbacks of identity verification outweighed the positives.
Technically, Mary concieved a child with the Holy Spirit, and Jesus is the Holy Spirit who is God.

1·3 days agoI don’t buy this. Controlling firearms and restricting who exactly can join a militia was a common strategy for preventing rebellions at the time the United States was founded.
The 2nd amendment has nothing to do with giving armies firearms. The people responsible for putting down slave revolts were always armed.

12·3 days ago…I’m not sure Europe would be better off if Iran was controlled by Russia, and I’m not sure if an independent Iran is a realistic option. At the end of the day, it seems like Europe needs the oil more than America does.
I sort of agree though. I haven’t heard a compelling argument as to why we are interfering in Europe’s problems. They have the strength of character to take on countries like Iran and Russia.

25·3 days agoDoes anything useful even come in 8K at this point? I saw it as a spec last time I went television shopping, but it seemed like something that wouldn’t be useful for another decade.

2·4 days ago… people have a tendency to underestimate how prone they are to manipulation. We should amend our constitutions to include freedom of thought as a fundamental human right.

2·4 days agoThey have their advantages. They aren’t particularly good at protecting a person since a person that owns or wields a firearm is much, much, much more likely to be stabbed or shot. The other person in the altercation needs to kill or disable them to preserve their own life.
Firearms do, however, make a great store of wealth. If a gun owner ever needs money, they can easily make a profit…especially on the black market. This is arguably one of the most important benefits from the perspective of gun owners. The value of a gun increases with inflation.

4·4 days agoIt would honestly depend on the melting point of the tar and what it’s mixed with. I guess they could just heat pure wood tar, but they had the technical know how to mix it with volatile plant oils to make it more liquid.
The goal is to humiliate a person; running around like a chicken is more humiliating than being a dead chicken. Since they wanted a show, they would have went out of their way to make it less deadly.

54·5 days ago…the argument your making about the 2nd amendment is why it’s now obsolete. When America was founded, firearms could actually be used to overthrow a corrupt government. They had practical utility. At this point, however, half the population armed with assault rifles wouldn’t make a difference. A combination of the government’s mass surveillance and superior firepower would put down the rebellion before it got off the ground
I’m of the opinion that the constitution should adjust to changing times. 18th century laws aren’t geared to solve 21st century issues.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•How do I block a community I was banned from?
14·5 days agoLet me reframe my comment. Tell me if you still think it’s trolling. Assume I’m responding to:
“Those woke people are getting what they deserve at the gas pump. They voted for Sleepy Joe Biden, they get what they deserve.”
…I’ve never met a “Woke” person in real life. I know a bunch of Democrats, but not the stereotype obsessed over on social media. It’s reminiscent of the McCarthy era and communism. Everyone talked about communists all day, every day, but they were sooo good at blending in that nobody saw them.
What does “Woke” even refer to? People who think the benefits of diversity outweigh the negatives? People who are annoyed with the people online ranting about the right to life and abortion? If this were the case, then a lot of the Republicans i know are apparently “Woke”.
…if you no longer think I’m trolling, then you just don’t agree with my original opinion.
I haven’t met many people that conform to the MAGA stereotype. It seems to mostly be used as a slur to dehumanize Republicans. I’m a centrist; I’d have made a similar argument if the majority was dehumanizing Democrats.

716·5 days agoProhibition is effective, it’s just that it doesn’t work for easy to manufacture compounds such as alcohol or marijuana. Every known human culture has independently discovered alcohol, and marijuana is a weed that is ready to smoke in its natural form.
As far as social media goes, my country has reached a point where TikTok and Facebook are preinstalled on every phone. If a parent buys their kid a phone and removes them, they will reinstall themselves after an automatic update. When you take into consideration the “streamlined” registration process, one can argue this is a means to target prepubescent children.
…I guess an 8 year old could download a VPN and steal their parents identification, but I feel like some form of prohibition would help.

34·5 days agoThanks. I figured I’d be blocked eventually because the opinions on that sub were so homogeneous, but it would have been fucked up if I had to make a new account to block the sub that banned me.
… it’s just baffling to me. Dissenting opinions are a good thing. Echo chambers aren’t healthy for the people in them. It’s just weird how the opinions of the people I know are so different than the opinions of people on the internet. It’s like I live in an alternate reality.
