Plus it was a house in the suburbs. Not ideal for socializing or culture.
And lastly, living with parents in the suburbs would be huge negatives for dating.

Management is often out of touch and full of shit
It’s always been pretty bad for large chunks of the population. This seems like a low point, but there have been many lows in living memory. Civil rights movement in the 60s. Vietnam war. War on drugs. Countless cruelties done to non-whites and queer folks.
Even the idealized stuff of “buy a house on one income” was more for white people than anything else. Redlining, mortgage discrimination, “and then the white people burned down our house” were all realities.
This country has always been deeply racist. The wealthy ownership class has largely been soulless ghouls. Maybe they build libraries and museums for a while, but they still oversaw tremendous suffering and poverty.
Yeah, I was going to say I saw almost this exact joke recently. That was the other one I saw.
It’s really hard to get people to suffer mild inconvenience when they don’t emotionally connect with the benefits.
Most of facebook’s evils are remote and impersonal. Seeing your cousin’s baby photos is real and at hand.
Sometimes I still see job postings that are like “MUST KNOW OBJECT ORIENTED PROGRAMMING” and I’m wondering who in 2026 isn’t at least passably familiar with it.
But then again I also see job posts that are like “must know Java or JavaScript”
I feel sorry for you and hope you cna find more fulfilling work that will let you grow, but I dont’t know what the job market is like right now
Where I work, there’s really no emphasis on code quality or testing. There’s also like no mentorship or senior developers leading the way.
They hired a guy with 1-2 years of experience and I feel really bad for him. Not only is he learning very little, he’s learning actively bad patterns. No one is teaching him about automated testing. Code reviews are just “you skim it. Don’t spend more than 30 minutes”.
Management of course loves LLMs and wants more usage.
Most of the code at my current job doesn’t even have the optional type annotations. You just see like def something(config). What’s config? A dict? A list? A string? Who the fuck knows.
Unfortunately most of the developers seem to have a very pre-modern take on programming and aren’t interested in changing anything.
There was a website where users could request something or other, like a PDF report. Users had a limited number of tokens per month.
The client would make a call to the backend and say how many tokens it was spending. The backend would then update their total, make the PDF, and send it.
Except this is stupid. First of all, if you told it you were spending -1 tokens, it would happily accept this and give you a free token along with your report.
Second of all, why is the client sending that at all? The client should just ask and the backend should figure out if they have enough credit or not.
People are being ground up by capitalism and it’s easier to just look at tiktok or play Baldur’s gate than actually engage with a messy person.
I try to stay in touch with people but it’s hard. I’m also kind of an insufferable asshole, and I think some people leave because they’re tired of “capitalism sucks” coming up
It’s wild to me how some places I’ve worked are like locked down, all the infrastructure is in terraform or whatever and can be deployed immediately… and other places are like “ssh into prod with the credentials from confluence, edit the config in vim, and paste the new code into a new file”
and a few of the worst offenders (Google is one that I know does this) add a random string of characters on the element that serve as a unique identifier that periodically changes and so requires me to readd them to my UBO blocklist.

They don’t care. All they care about is their in-group is strong and the out-group is punished. They’re shitty people.
Republicans have a lot of blood on their hands and we should stop treating them as reasonable adults.
Conservatives have bad ideas about nearly everything. They should under no circumstances be allowed to have any power. I’d even say they’re an existential threat to the US and the rest of humanity.
It’s far past time to stop treating them as just folks with a different opinion. This is not “oh well they wanted to paint the bedroom walls green and I wanted blue.”
Someone announcing themselves a conservative should be taken as a declaration of a threat. Removing them from power is self defense.
If you accept that there are moral/ethical problems with eating meat (contribution to climate change, health concerns, animals being killed and eaten, whatever), and choose to eat meat anyway, and encounter a vegan, what has to happen?
You can accept that they are making a better choice, but then you have to accept that you’re making a worse choice. Most people are cowards and protect the ego at any cost. Rather than shrugging and saying “yeah, i should eat less meat. Good for you taking the high road”, which requires accepting that you’re not being the best, you can instead grab onto any reasons why no it’s really them that sucks. That’s easier, more comfortable, and doesn’t require any painful introspection or changes.
It’s the same mechanism when people get mad at cyclists, pedestrians, people who go to the gym, people who don’t shop at Walmart, whatever. They’re doing something that makes you feel bad in comparison. Most people are terrible at that and will lash out instead of doing anything productive.
Alternatively, or maybe additionally, people are really tribal, and once they adopt the idea that vegans (or cyclists, or people driving small cars, or people wearing sandals, whatever) are in the outgroup, then they enjoy being hostile to them.
People are ego driven emotional morons. All of us. Me, too. It’s terrible.
On the one hand, this might help fence sitters that are like “there’s no content there”.
On the other, I just don’t personally care for a stream of random images like Instagram et al do.
