I’ve known many folks who got laid off from Rogers in favour of cheap overseas labour and AI integration.

31·18 days agoIt wasn’t explicitly stated what sensitive data was stolen so I’m not sure what you’re on about.
Sensitive data can include personal information as well and there is certainly no altruistic purpose for having such information.
Regardless of whether scientific knowledge should be public information or not there is certainly a better way to obtain this information that does not compromise individuals. I don’t think this sort of behaviour encourages others to enter these fields of research at all.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•How do I get the damn cat to understand I can feed myself?English
12·1 month agoWell, this is the consequence of letting it outside unfortunately- on top of risk of injury and death but I’m sure y’all know that already. There’s not really an effective way to train them against this behaviour the way you might a dog.
So long as there’s critters outside the cat is going to hunt them. Maybe you could try to give the kitty a snag safe cat collar with a bell? It might alert the wildlife so they have time to avoid being caught.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Why do doctors not seem to give a fuck about pain? Is this just an American doctor thing, or is it universal?English
3·1 month agoI live close to a few safe consumption sites so without seeing a study on this, this is just my observations.
There’s an increase of homeless people around (or perhaps they are more visible?) but since they have nowhere to go they get shifted around town by the police force every now and again. There seems to be a fair amount of violence amongst themselves as well, occasionally bleeding out into the general populace when we have big events nearby. I’ve also got friends from back in HS that went to these sites to “try” a variety of drugs they were curious about and now they’re full blown addicts that I don’t hear from anymore. Maybe they would have tried this stuff anyways but the whole draw for them was that it was “easy” and nobody would stop them.
Definitely aware of the YIMBY’s, I remember seeing their signs posted around before the sites went up, hence why the site got placed in my area despite not having the better infrastructure of the higher income neighbourhood nearby.
Not against safe consumption sites by any means it just feels like a bandaid on a festering wound situation. My neighbourhood safe consumption site hasn’t seemed to improve in the many years it’s been here- worsening conditions I’m chalking up to an increase in the general homeless population. The only time familiar faces seem to disappear is if they pass away.

7·1 month agoI bring my towel into the bathroom and turn the water on. I tell myself I can turn the water off and give up but usually just the partial act of showering will get me to do it. Putting on music or a podcast helps so I can pay attention to something else while showering helps too.
Otherwise I’ll use wet wipes for the days it’s just not happening.

Canada@lemmy.ca•Teachers want the federal government to address violence in schoolsEnglish
8·3 months agoIsn’t a large part of violence from children in schools a result of parental negligence and lack of third spaces for children?
I’ve heard a lot of teachers having difficulty communicating with parents on how to address issues with their children’s education. Not just with violence but with how severely behind in the curriculum most of them seem to be. Kid’s that are years behind where they should be at their current grade.
Parents meet these concerns with a dismissive or hostile attitude, pushing for their children to be able to pass into the next grade regardless of how behind they are. The students come to class bolstered to have little respect for their teacher and act as they please.
And outside of the classroom these kids are limited to where they can go and what they can do. It’s expensive to have access to a third space in the real world unless your area is well funded to provide that. They resort to spending time online and that only partially addresses their developmental needs regarding socialization with others and what that entails. It can also reinforce negative traits if they find the wrong kind of guidance there.
The kids that want to learn and enjoy school are frustrated with this as well, not just the teachers. Any time I encounter a kid in online spaces they always have a lot to say about poor learning conditions and rampant vandalism in their schools from aggressive classmates. Many have expressed they are considered the smartest of their classes but they know they are average at best and yearn to see other students above their level to bounce ideas off of. They are also lonely because they can’t relate to their peers and have to resort to speaking to people online.
I’ve encountered the disruptive ones in these spaces as well and I always try to be mindful of the fact that they’re minds are not fully developed so immaturity is to be expected but they are concerning to be around. I can’t articulate it adequately here but it’s… more extreme? Perhaps these kids are hyping up their personal escapades but when I reflect it with the information the other children tell me it’s quite concerning…
It’s difficult to guide them towards better coping strategies for their boredom unless you somehow manage to gain their respect. I don’t want to babysit kids online but I’m finding I have to. If one of the rude kids comes to respect me and I just ignore their problematic behaviours then it feels like I’m enabling it. They need frequent guidance that I am not equipped nor feel comfortable to provide.
TLDR This feels like such a multifaceted problem from my perspective. The government has A LOT to address if they want to fix this problem.
