There’s no difference between a party that can impose its will and a cabal or coalition that does as we saw under the liberals ndp coalition last government. Remember that the vast majority of gov’ts this century have been minority gov’ts.

Effective management absolutely requires clear direction and vision. A gov’t should have a clear mandate and be empowered to execute it within the boundaries of it’s constitutional authority. Otherwise parties can throw the blame aorund and you see people stay in power forever. Israel is an example. In situations like that it’s all about posturing and optics and never about good governance. You still get that with first pass to post to a degree but it does give governments the freedom to do unpopular things once in awhile when it’s the right thing to do

There are lots of ways to improve the system and improve representation but proportional representation is probably the worst

Proportional representation is a horrible idea, which is one of the main reasons that every province that’s taken a good look at it has rejected it. Sometimes twice.

And frankly the systems that are in place that do use it are not the same as Canada or are having a lot more trouble than this article would let on

Proportional representation is management by committee. It is the least efficient and least accountable way to run a government.

There are definitely ways where we could substantially improve the representation of smaller parties Within our existing system and make things better but switching to proportional representation would not. If anyone needs any more proof then just watching what happened with the NDP and liberal coalition over the last 4 years should be evidence enough

Unfortunately doing what we want is not really an option. It’s not a question of whether or not we’re going to lose it becomes a question of whether or not we’re going to lose or we’re going to lose horribly and with disastrous consequences.

Trump is unlikely ever put the 50% tariff on us certainly not for anything time but he might very well put tariffs on us that are lower. And we simply couldn’t survive that. We might be able to diversify our economy in the next 20 years or so but not any time in the immediate future,

Future so at the end of the day we’re going to have to give him what he wants and get what we can get which is going to be terrible.

Carney played a strategy of string trump out to the midterms and hope that he loses badly at the midterms and in the meantime give him whatever he wants to drag things out. So we came down every thing from the bridge to the DST etc

But now trump thinks that carney will came on anything and he’s not going to wait till the midterms.

So now we’re in a tough position. We can’t walk away cuz if trump actually does put those tariffs on we’re dead. I mean really dead, like declare bankruptcy and live like Mexico dead

He’s doing that anyway. That doesn’t change. That’s what happens when you cave to him every time he asks for something like Carney has.

But he does tend to honor deals. He never ripped up kousma even though he slapped millions of other tariffs on us. CUSMA is still in force.

So no matter what happens if you have a deal the business community takes it as a certain degree of certainty and is willing to invest based on that. I guarantee you it is Infinitely more expensive to have no deal and no investments in Canada. It’s not even a question we simply couldn’t possibly survive it. We would become a third world country if investment keeps fleeing the way it has been for the last five quarters

I don’t know how much analysis this needs. He wants to try and get a deal with carney on terms that work for him and he’s threatening a new killer option if carney doesn’t give him what he wants. He wants to take the rest of the Canadian Auto sector and he wants to be able to dump dairy products into Canada. Until carney agrees to that there’s even going to be any negotiations and trump is going to hold this over Canada’s head until he figures he’s got to win

And the problem is every minute that this is in play guarantees no investment in Canada. Nobody’s putting a nickel into Canada until they find out what’s going on

That’s not much of a tactic. We simply can’t afford another two and a half years of this. And there’s a very real chance that the republicans will win again and no reason to believe that the next republican will be any nicer to us. I simply not a winning strategy

That’s not even remotely close. It’s not a massive deal at all. It will be a tiny fraction of the crude we sell America for example and an even tinier fraction of our trade. If Japan quadrupled that deal it still wouldn’t come remotely close to replacing 1% of what we’ve got going with the united states

And Japan’s own prime minister has said investment in canada is contingent on what the deal is with the us.

So no it’s not already happening. We may very well increase our trade with other countries but it’s not even going to cover a tenth of what we do with America, certainly not anytime soon. Maybe over the next 20 or 30 years we could build up relationships but even then it would be tough

I disagree entirely. Carney is entirely reactionary and has no plan for the long term.

Let’s take a look at some of the evidence. He had no plan whatsoever to arrive at a deal with trump. That is now obvious. There was no strategy or anything. He just gave trump what he wanted and hopes that trump would have mercy, and that’s just not trump.

He claimed that we would build houses at a rate not seen since world war II because he knew that’s what people wanted to hear at the time. But he had absolutely no plan to deal with that and worse not only are we building fewer homes than we were but his big strategy was to bail out the developers because they’re having their first bad year in almost two decades.

He claimed that he would create a law that would have private investment building pipelines in Canada. And his weirdo Tinkerbell law that said he can magically wave his wand and make something legal that isn’t legal didn’t impress the industry at all and was a horrible idea. Now in reaction to that he’s offering to put up taxpayer dollars to build a pipeline but he still hasn’t put forward any kind of business cases to why that’s the best idea for Canada. He’s only reacting to Alberta threatening to separate

I could go on for some time but the fact that matter is everything he does reacts to what’s happening at the moment and there is absolutely no long-term planning

And there’s no chance by the way of every other country in the world replacing America as our trading partner. The one thing he did say that was correct was that Canada could be its own trading partner if we eliminated interprovincial trade barriers and that would replace a good deal of what we send to the states. He said that was going to be one of his focuses and produced a report showing that it could almost entirely make up for what we lost with the Americans

Then he got elected and found out it was hard and abandoned the idea. He eliminated one federal law that really wasn’t a problem for anybody and then after one meeting with the provinces gave up and ran away. Now he’s flying all over the world spending billions of dollars and not bringing back any significant amount of money instead of spending that time working with the provinces to find a way to create an economic union between them that would solve our problems

Well timber can. Our timber industry is already getting creamed. They JUST shut down another pulp milll last week here in bc and logging is in a death spiral. Fertilizer less so but we’re not going to keep our economy going on fertilizer and oil.

And the problem isn’t just trump, we’ve had 5 consecutive quarters… that’s QUARTERS mind you not months, of more business investment leaving canada than staying and it looks like this quarter is going to be the same… And the kick in the teeth is that pre dates trump. We were already weak to begin with. Now trump has made it worse and he knows very well that it doesn’t take much at this point to make our economy take a nose dive.

This guy wants us poor and collapsing so that he can take over, actually take over if possible and financially take over if not.

The deal was leaked to boomberg and it does NOT include payment on the interest to the debt which carney had suggested, and it’s a worse deal for us than we had. I don’t think you get how it works. The American stop buying our products and start looking for other products. But most importantly a lot of the goods and services that are manufactured in Canada only are able to do so because they sell to America so when Americans stop buying that product it’s cheaper and easier for those companies to just set up in America instead.

Trump knows this very well. More tariffs cripples are economy and prevents the investment we need to stay competitive or become competitive as we’ve fallen behind

Unfortunately due to the trade barriers we have between provinces it’s unlikely that it would be replaced by local consumption. In fact even if there were no trade barriers in Canada it would be tough but the way things are there’s no chance.

This was something carney talked about during the election and promised he would work on, he held one meeting with the provinces to see about coming to an agreement and then he just abandoned it. If he had spent as much time working with the provinces as he has with other countries we would probably be further ahead

The government has done nothing to move projects forward unfortunately. The closest that come is this supposed pipeline project but they’re now talking about using government money which completely defeats the purpose. We can’t borrow enough money to support an economy, sooner or later that leads to a collapse

Unless something radically changes in the near future as far as our direction we will face severe economic hardship and it will be extremely difficult to recover. We are not building maybe bill as he promised, we have not eliminated into provincial trade is he suggested, and our businesses are fleeing to the states along with our investment, I think we’re into our 6th street quarter of business investment loss in Canada having already completed five? That predates Trump and we can’t be losing business investment like that

We’re in real trouble. It’s not short-term trouble our infrastructure for providing economic growth is eroding at an enormous rate and it is insanely hard to replace that once it’s gone

Reading the comments I don’t think people understand what’s involved here.

The companies are moving to the states because that’s where the majority of their customers are. Which means it’s not viable for them to stay in Canada and only sell to Canadian markets.

Which means nobody’s going to be replacing these businesses. We’re talking about hundreds of thousands of jobs that will be lost with no replacement.

The state can’t nationalize them, the workers can’t take them over, they’re just not viable as businesses anymore.

And all those businesses and all the people that work for those businesses pay taxes. Which means we’re going to have less and less money to provide services the people who are poor etc

This isn’t about giving states our money, this is about us not having any money anymore. I think people need to wake up to the reality of how serious this is

The beings are finite but the wealth is not. I don’t know how to explain this more simply. If you fall into the ocean there’s only so much water you can drink so your ability is finite but from a practical point of view the water is infant.

The wealth is infinite. There can’t be a shortage of it. Our capacity can be limited. Therefore when we’re talking about the real world that we live in it is dumb to talk about wealth as if there’s a shortage and it makes sense to discuss capacity to create wealth.

I know the wealthy aren’t taking any resources from the rest of us. Wealthier in a position where they can create wealth at a higher and more effective rate. But interestingly enough that wealth creation actually benefits us and we make more than we would have as a result of it, not less

You have every bit as much of potential to increase your wealth and become extremely wealthy as anyone else and if that was your primary focus in life you could certainly do that. While it takes a lot of work it’s not terribly hard.

You have a fundamentally flawed view of what wealth is. Well isn’t a thing. It’s not like there’s a limited amount of wealthonium in the world and whoever holds it gets it and nobody else does. That’s not how it works.

Wealth is created through activity. Without the activity there is no wealth. Therefore the supply of wealth is endless, the problems usually come with limits or issues with the activity

So no, increasing wealth inequity is not the issue. The issue is that people are struggling harder and harder to be able to do enough activity that’s worth enough value to be able to get what they want. That’s true whether there are wealthy people or not

So the underlying issue is that the middle class and poor class aren’t able to create enough wealth to meet their needs and that has nothing to do with the wealthy. You don’t address that by worrying about what the wealthier doing, you address that by creating more opportunity for the middle class and the poor. And funny enough to do that you need the help of the wealthy which they are more than happy to give if they feel that it will be successful

Right now the tax burden and other burdens on the middle class prevent any disposable income or time that would allow for them to increase the value of their skills or begin to acquire assets and that is the problem. The wealthy are not excited about starting new businesses or educational opportunities that would fix this because they see the country as failing

And no reactionary politics does not follow from financial systems in the slightest.

I didn’t say whether or not it was a success I said it proved me right. Wealth inequality is something that people that don’t understand how money works talk about. Whether or not someone else is richer than you has nothing to do with how rich you are. It’s not a measure that has any particular value. Reactionary politics has nothing to do with our financial system that’s something else.

And most of that is a product of the last 12 years or so. And much of that problem was created by an imbalance between the growth of our population and our lack of ability to supply the needs of that population. As I have already pointed out with regards to housing, medicine, education, etc.

And that becomes a cycle or death spiral where are inability to supply leads to inflationary pressure and low wages which leads to our inability to supply etc

So bringing in low-wage people in any way shape or form make the economy stronger. At best it can mask weaknesses and cover them up for a short time until they kind of blow up in your face.

The ability to create products and services including ones that didn’t even exist before which creates new demand is what drives us.
