  • I just don’t think you can compare Nixon and Reagan and come to a conclusion which is worse. It’s like the old thought experiment. “If a person who had never had an evil thought in their lives does a good deed, is it greater or less than the same deed performed by a person who had mostly committed bad deeds in their life?”

Not that either Reagan or Nixon would be a good man.

I basically view Nixon as being a thoroughly evil calculating man. The reason he created the EPA and considered progressive policies was that they furthered his political career, and he didn’t care if anybody else benefitted or was harmed.

Reagan, on the other hand, I view as an emotionally driven man. He was obsessed with appearances and with winning. He was sort of like a smarter version of Trump.

Anyways, the problem is that I think Nixon the man was a far worse person than Reagan the man. And Reagan’s corruption may not have been possible except for the way that Nixon’s corruption paved the way, and that Nixon’s downfall stoked Reagan’s fears of losing.

It’s only very recently that, with the rise of social networking, the greater public has had the opportunity to really get to know rich assholes like Donald Trump and Elon Musk.

And one of the things we’ve been able to learn from interacting with them is that they are definitely not better than other people.

Rich people have been portrayed as being well-educated. But it turns out that they paid for their diplomas and so they’re probably dumber than average. Far dumber in the cases of Trump and Musk.

Rich people have sometimes been portrayed as hard workers who deserve their riches. But it turns out that they don’t do shit except party with pedophiles.

Just like you said, they just pay some stooges to do their work for them. Rich people are nothing but leeches.

  • Taylor Rehmet, a Democrat and local union leader, won a runoff for a state Senate seat that’s been held by Republicans since 1992. What’s more, he bested the Republican Leigh Wambsganss despite having one-tenth as much money. Much of Wambsganss’s funding came from Dunn and the Wilks brothers.

Republicans blamed low turnout for Rehmet’s victory, while pundits opined that the Trump administration’s unpopularity was to blame.

In America today, these are the same thing. The way you win is by encouraging certain people to vote and discouraging other people from voting. Trump has been taking care of discouraging Republicans and MAGA from voting all by himself.

I really think America needs mandatory voting to stop this behavior, but it’s much easier to encourage or discourage people to vote than it is to actually carry out the will of the people.

  • If she doesn’t eat any creature that feels pain, that doesn’t mean she’s a vegan. She might be a vegan, but that statement makes her a vegetarian by most definitions.

And he’s snuggling with pigs on pig farms. I think there are some people who would say that such actions are only possible on exploited pigs who are headed for the slaughterhouse, and therefore, because he has made himself part of the meat system, he wouldn’t be a vegan, either.

I’m not a vegan either, but I find it weird that SMBC would use that word so loosely in a strip where the definition of “vegan” is so central.

  • I’ve done a little bit of language studying and one thing I heard about repeatedly is that people tend to mistakenly believe in their own exceptionalism.

Like, their own native language has idioms, and they just assumed that other languages didn’t have idioms.

But we are all humans and languages are all going to exist in support of human communication. Therefore, you should assume that all languages have all major features of expression, including idioms and sarcasm.

Similarly, cultures are made from humans and to facilitate human interaction, so you should expect that things like sarcasm will exist in every culture.
