Exactly, word for word? No not really but a lot of the politically relevant themes the shows had are disappointingly still relevant today, Archie uses the same gotchas as an excuse to be a racist pos and his son uses the same appeals to humanity and doing the right thing progressives have been using. Its like going back and watching West Wing, we’re still dealing with the same ineffectual liberals who get moral victories while losing the mandates of power and bible thumping conservatives making the lives of everyone who isnt a straight white dude a living hell.
Ok but lets say they did and Archie bunker plays this huge racist and drops the N word every chance he gets at home along with a host of other slang terms for races. Then come to find out he goes to work and is surrounded by different races and never drops any slang at his job or when they go out for beers or something. Kind of like that Archie episode with Sammy Davis Jr?
There was that one recreation episode they did on live TV with Woody Harleson from a few years ago I think?
Edit: did some more reading, have more to say
So after checking out the Wikipedia page apparently Cartman from South Park was heavily inspired by Archie. So do with that what you will.
Sanford and son, absolutely. Well, no, because Redd Foxx is dead, and nobody else could play the role under the Sanford name and make it work. But a sitcom around a junk man, his son, and their hijinks while working from base of racial inequality? Sure, that would be easy to make work.
All in the Family though? Harder ask. See, the kind of gentle and approachable bigot that Archie was never existed. But people wanted to believe they did. Nobody would ever have credible suspension of disbelief with a the same premise now. And, worse, you couldn’t do it without addressing the elephant in the room. >!The GOP use the elephant as a symbol, and thus the maga segment of that party do as well. I hate that this explanation was remotely necessary!<.
The show wouldn’t be a humorous and often poignant dissection of American culture and values. It would be a shitshow of epic proportions.
I mean there is a pretty rock solid standard thats been established for remakes. The remake is adapted to carry the current acceptable behaviors and dialogue for when the remake is made. So off top of my head having wached both x-men orignal cartoon and the new x-men 97 here are some charmges i noticed:
original cartoon and whole franchise included has always had the parallelism between racism and anti-mutant plotpoints. X-men 97 went way more cruel with it to match the current world’s state of affairs. The original had anti-mutant figures INFILTRATING OR ASSOCIATED to the US government while x-men 97 has the anti-mutant sentiment baked into the government. The comments of the villans are way more cruel and seem motivated specifically by the current admin use of ICE. “Theyre like cockroaches you let one in and theyll all come with” im not looking up the exact quote but its the jist of one villain’s dialogue from episode 1 season 1 of x-men 97.
Im putting this together on the spot commenting this so dont butcher me but another sentiment I feel changed is that in the original the anti-mutant plot was more of a battle to prove mutants are not dangerous or the enemy while x-men 97 anti-mutant plot is more focused on fighting against the biggots who are basically real life ICE 2.0.
This was the closest example i could think of off top of head and i know this might be comparing aspects that are opposite to what you are asking. Cuz im not super familiar with the 2 specific shows you referenced but the understanding i took from it is baskically wondering if the Chapels show could get away with performing the skit “The Ni@@er Family” where the black mailman delivers mail to a white family who have a last name spelled the same as the n-word.
My final answer is yes they could be remade but the remake would be a continuation of the characters like they did with malcome in the middle where they add story aspects that occured between the origonal and remake that would give basis for why sentiments or dialogue used by certain characters is now different.
If you wanna know if they could do a direct remake of the original series then my answer is still yes and they would be written to exclude the curremtly unacceptable aspects of the original show.
Yeah, but they’d be YouTube influencers
