Occupied, a Norwegian show about Norway trying to stop being a petrostate. Already mentioned: Chernobyl, Deadwood (avoid its movie), Six Feet Under (the finale is amazing).

Top tv series for me is firefly and top movie is lotr. I literally have a shelf displaying my dvds of just those above all the other media in a place of honor.
