If you’re moving for economic reasons, because you’re country was decimated by colonialism / neocolonialism, and the country you’re moving to prides itself on individual liberty then you have no obligation to completely abandon your native culture.

Even today ‘expats’ rarely integrate into the local culture. Don’t give up a part of your identity just because you want to fit in.

By all means, when in Rome do as the Romans do. But that doesn’t have to mean losing yourself in the process

This s the most controversial opinion here, as in it has no logical credibility, and is unacceptable in polite company in most countries.

        is unacceptable in polite company

Depends which part of the world you’re from. In Japan for example this would be a very common opinion

Actually I think you’ll find that in Japan they world prefer you didn’t migrate at all. That’s a whole other thing. Regardless, their attitudes to other cultures are hardly something to aspire to IMO.

The “melting pot” is often used wrongly. In this case, you would agree with op.

The melting pot is not a salad of cultures, it is a cauldron that melts any ingredient and pours it into a unified mold. Rarely are cultural characteristics preserved in the USA. The predominant Us-american culture swallows them whole and everybody becomes American.

Weird, my AI assistant puts it a little differently.

Regardless, if this is in fact something that people say, I’m glad that none of them seem to be in my orbit. If you don’t see the problem with this kind of hyper-conformism then I don’t think I can help you.

As far as I’m concerned, you are not welcome in Serbia, don’t go there, or I will go out of my way to find some way to get you deported, or otherwise ensure you become a pariah.
