I vote far right because I hate immigrants who come to our country and do not adopt its culture

That reminds me of the (apparently real) complaint by a British couple vacationing in Spain, who were outraged that nobody had told them so many people would be speaking Spanish. 😀

I worked with an Englishman who has lived in the Netherlands for more than 20 years without learning Dutch.
We had a work trip to Madrid, and he went the weekend beforehand for a short vacation. I ran into him on Sunday night and asked him how it went. He said it was terrible, because he’s a vegetarian and couldn’t eat anything because nobody spoke English. He didn’t know what to order or how to ask if something was vegetarian. He was outraged that nobody spoke English. In Madrid. The capital of Spain. 🙈
Plenty of people speak English in Madrid. They were probably fucking with him because he’s British and was likely rude like the typical British tourist. If he just asked “Habla usted ingles?” Plenty of people would accommodate, especially hospitality staff.
That was the advice I got when I went to Europe.
Learn how to say four things “Hello”, “Do you speak English?”, “Sorry” and “Thank you” and most people will do their best to work with you.
I am never sure since I am American so know lots of Spanish from osmosis. But of course in any large European city there will be plenty of people who know enough English to help out. So yeah, he probably approached every interaction with stereotypical British arrogance and annoyed the people who would have been happy to help him otherwise. 🙈
Personally I’d just point to myself and say “No Hablo Espanol” my pronunciation is better than my spelling. Though I don’t anyone would look at my pasty ass and assume I know any language outside of english and even then that’s debatable.
Anywhere else I’d understand the outrage. But Dutch isn’t a real language.

On behalf of the rest of the country that has more brain cells than a used tea bag, we’d like to issue an apology to Madrid, the Netherlands, and yourself for his ignorance.
There’s some of us here who are trying their best to educate these people but it feels like trying to hold water in a sieve.
They knew, he just made it too easy from the sounds of it 😂
Or the British expats suddenly unable to stay in European countries after brexit and not accepting it was because of those who voted to leave the EU
OMG the ones that voted for Brexit despite having a retirement home in the EU and then got kicked out for not paying taxes were hilarious!

To be fair, absolutely noone knew what type of Brexit was being voted on. That minor detail was left out of any of the conversation.
Fair enough. Although then Boris Johnson won the election, so someone was happy with his shit show Brexit, no?

Presumably the argument is “if I’m not going to understand what anyone is saying, can I at least be somewhere with less rain please?”
Or the German tourists in Italy who were sad that they just missed the ferry to Arrivare, but happy they can still take the one to Partenza.
