The Enterprise is sent to monitor an Earth-like planet that is at the end of its life and is in the process of tearing itself apart. While doing so, the crew is also investigating the mysterious deaths of the personnel aboard a science outpost on the planet surface. One member of the away team is exposed to an unknown substance and one by one the crew of the Enterprise begins to behave dangerously erratic.
