The real winner is the Canadian government, so it would be just a little hypocritical to increase taxes on oil companies who are benefitting from the same situation.
Maybe I’m misunderstanding your point - the government does not “win” by levying taxes on things. Government is not a business. Taxes are a method of redistribution, not government gain
They collect a tax bonanza because of the increase in the price of gas. Then they can give some of it back and play hero. Far better to scrap the industrial carbon tax which affects the price of everything, including food.
