Hey peeps, I’m pretty sure they’re reacting to the SECOND “normal” statement, not the first.

213·12 days agoYes, but that means they’re using the tool incorrect. I can attempt to jam a wrench on the end of a soldering iron and use it to make a circuit board, that doesn’t mean I’m using the tool wrong, and should be justifiably mocked for doing so.
LLMs have their place. The fact they are being wildly abused and misused does not diminish that.

213·12 days agoBetter be afraid of them new-fangled digital calculators too! Real calculations should be done by people. Having them performed by computers will make us dumber.
It’s a tool. It can be used right and wrong. Being afraid of the tool because it is being used wrong doesn’t make it go away, and doesn’t make it less useful.
Why did you feel the need to make that comparison? Did anyone here mention supporting their actions? Is the strawman fighting back?
I actually don’t agree with this. You can also do the prep the restaurant does. Stir-fry, I pre-cut veggies and make various stir fries all week. Pho, I make a huge batch of broth and eat pho every day for a week. Sushi, I pre-slice the veggies and pre-cool the rice then, you guessed it, I make it for about a week.
If you need to have wildly different meals every night then I agree with you. But I’m content to have the same meal 5 to 7 times before switching.
You’re talking past each other, using “better” in different ways. Correct, my cooking is technically inferior to restaurant cooking for exactly the reasons you described. However, the recipes themselves are designed by an individual with preferences. Even if my cooking is technically inferior, it will be ‘better’ simply because I am cooking for my own palate and preferences. Same word, completely different meaning.

What you want to be normal and what is actually normal are not the same thing. Regardless of best wishes, it actually is normal in a shocking number of places. Unless you’re referring exclusively to the small social circle you live in, but that’s not really a useful data point for us to discuss, because it’s not what the conversation is actually about.
